National Executive Council (NEC) Retreat Communiqué 


APRIL 2025


The newly elected National Executive Council (NEC) of the SPACO Alumni Association convened its inaugural retreat on March 28, 2025, at the Alumni Centre, St. Patrick’s Grammar School, Ibadan. The retreat focused on strategic planning, infrastructure development, alumni engagement, and institutional strengthening.

1. Engagement with School Management 

Prior to the retreat, the NEC met with the school management on March 17, 2025, following the Feast Day Mass at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Bashorun. Discussions centered on the school's formational structure, admission processes, and students' performance in WAEC and NECO examinations. The aim was to identify areas requiring improvement and to develop targeted programs with clear goals and timelines.

2. Enhancing Inclusiveness and Participation

Recognizing the need for broader engagement, the NEC approved the expansion of committee memberships to an average of seven members and established goal-oriented committees to foster inclusivity and optimize alumni resource mobilization.


3. Harmonization of Programs

A subcommittee presented a proposed calendar of activities for 2025. Once finalized, this calendar will be shared with all alumni to facilitate planning and encourage active participation.


4. Infrastructure Revitalization

To address the physical deterioration of school facilities, the NEC resolved to:

• Repair the damaged section of the perimeter fence by April 30, 2025.

• Conduct a comprehensive termite and pest control operation during the second term break, with periodic repetitions to safeguard the school's structures.


5. Project Sponsorship Framework

The NEC will collaborate with the school management to compile a list of current needs and projects eligible for alumni sponsorship. This list will be accessible at the Principal’s Office and the Alumni Centre.

6. Strengthening the Alumni Centre

The retreat officially activated the Alumni Centre as the registered office of the Association. Additional resolutions include:

• Compilation of a comprehensive Alumni Register with contact details.

• Establishment of a four-member committee to guide the Centre’s usage.

• Inventory and procurement of necessary furniture and equipment.


7. Library Upgrade Initiative

A “Stock the School Library” project is scheduled for June 2025, in partnership with alumni in publishing and education sectors. The goal is to equip the library with modern textbooks and promote a reading culture.


8. Academic Excellence Awards

The NEC encourages sponsorship of academic awards across all subjects to stimulate healthy competition and reward excellence among students.


9. Payment Automation

Plans are underway to automate dues and subscription payments and provide monthly updates on financial contributions by members.

10. Post-Election Reflections

The NEC acknowledged issues from the last alumni elections and emphasized unity and collaboration as keys to sustained growth and impact.


11. Constitution Review Committee

A seven-member committee was inaugurated to review the Association's constitution:

Terms of Reference include:

• Clarify ambiguous constitutional provisions.

• Review and modernize electoral processes.

• Outline diaspora participation eligibility.

• Solicit member input via memoranda and referendum.

• Define roles of BOT members in committees, including the Electoral Committee.

Timeline: Three months for submission of the final report.

13. NECO Sponsorship

The NEC resolved to fund NECO exam fees for 41 final-year students, totaling ₦1,721,000.00. Alumni are encouraged to support this initiative through direct sponsorship.


13B. Career & Health Webinar Series

Quarterly virtual sessions for alumni (coordinated by VP2) and mentorship programs for students (anchored by VP1) were approved.


14. Annual Dinner & Awards

A yearly social and recognition event will be instituted to foster camaraderie and celebrate alumni's achievements.


15. Acts of Generosity

Special thanks to the following members for their contributions:

16. Institutionalizing the Retreat

The NEC Retreat is now a periodic in-house review mechanism for assessing performance and enhancing accountability among officeholders.
